  The Southwest is a place of amazing diversity, where plants and animals of the Neararctic intersperse with those of the Neotropics, a land of jaguar and mountain lion, javelina and white-tailed deer. Birds such as the coppery-tailed trogon and white-eared hummingbird fly the same skies as red-tailed hawks and turkey vultures. Its a land that famed naturalist Aldo Leopold called near to being the cream of creation. The Southwest is also a region of incredible human diversity. Courses pass through areas originally inhabited by ancient cultures, and evidence of their civilizations is still present.   This is a great example of the trials and tribulations of trying to find grease for the NOLS veggie powered bus. Emanuel Rosen, author of "The Anatomy of Buzz Revisited", gets dirty and helps us fuel up. The NOLS Bus is powered by a diesel engine, specially converted to run on vegetable oil gathered and filtered from restaurants and dining halls during the NOLS on the Road tour. Vegetable oil offers similar gas mileage as petroleum diesel, but with fewer polluting emissions. Veggie oil also leaves behind a more pleasant alternative to the black cloud of diesel engine smoke—instead of that gagging diesel smell, the bus leaves in its wake the unmistakable smell of Chinese food, popcorn or french fries!   We all know that a poor stove set-up wastes fuel, and a using additional tools, like a pot parka, saves fuel beyond a normal good set-up. But how much does fuel consumption differ with stove set-up? We put it to the test by testing three Whisperlite stoves with three different treatments. We controlled as many variables as we could by testing the same stove under each of the three treatments, always using the same amount of fuel, always pumping the stove the same amount, always heating 2 liters of water, and always starting with water of the same temperature.
